Drunk Noods

You may remember that one of the previous times Brent dropped by the Permanent Equity Investing team office at 305 North 10th Street in Columbia, Missouri, our BD associate Holly (who also now leads our Investing Team meeting) took the opportunity to tell him about the “big present” she had left for him “in the bathroom” (it turned out to be a trash can). So there’s precedent for someone saying something unexpected and/or unfortunate in the presence of our founder and CEO. That said, I don’t know that anything in that genre will ever top what I’m about to tell you…

See, our CLO Taylor had scheduled a business meeting in the 305 conference room one morning to talk through some legal issues in the portfolio and invited Brent to participate. He did, and after the conclusion of the meeting, walked upstairs to see how the rest of the team was doing. Since there’s seemingly always something interesting happening in Holly’s life, and since the rest of us mostly only prattle on about youth sports if you ask us what’s going on in our own lives, Brent asked Holly if she had any fun weekend plans.

“Yes, Brent, I do.” she said. “We’re making drunk noods!”

Stunned silence.

“What’s wrong?” Holly asked.

Because nothing, as we all processed what had just transpired. Holly, of course, had said “drunk noods,” Gen Z shorthand for drunken noodles, a delicious spicy Thai dish that Holly and her boyfriend like to cook for dinner. What else would she have said?

A  lesson from the big present in the bathroom was that no matter how bad a situation is, “it can always end up worse.” An irony of that lesson is that I never thought anyone could top telling our CEO than that there was a big present waiting for him in the bathroom. But lessons are lessons for a reason.

As for how anyone is going to top “drunk noods,” well, I just hope I’m around to see it. Unfortunately, karma would suggest I am also going to be the one to do it.

Have a great weekend.
