Tim Hanson

Tim Hanson is the President and Chief Investment Officer of Permanent Equity. He leads the firm’s Investing team and works closely with operators across the portfolio on capital allocation. He sits on the boards of Air-Cert, Pacific Air Industries, and Craig Frames.

He studied playwriting and government at Georgetown and began his career as a White House writer (the personnel office called the landline of his DC apartment minutes before his roommate was about to unplug it for the move out). He then moved into investing, first analyzing public markets then allocating private capital. Brent hired him to Permanent Equity as CFO in 2018. He moved into the CIO role in 2023.

As CIO, Tim’s days are diligence, deal flow, and post-close work with operators with the goal of dialing in on high reward, high probability opportunities. He enjoys discussing opportunity cost, cost of capital, and lots of other abstract concepts that actually do have practical applications. 

Tim has written about how to assemble durable, cash-generative companies into a portfolio built to be held for the long term. And, he writes Unqualified Opinions, a daily newsletter, where he serves as the firm’s loudest evangelist for “beer money” (i.e., really free cash flow). 

Tim, his wife Cary, and their kids live on a few acres outside Rocheport, MO (population: ~200). They burn the wildflower meadow before every spring, keep bees, and drive the John Deere Gator more than is strictly necessary. Outside work, Tim runs, gardens, and is still soccer-ing.
