Crab Cakes Were a Great Idea

My wife and son had to travel one weekend recently for his swimming while my daughter and I had to stay in town for her soccer, so the two of us were home alone without evening plans. My daughter asked if we could make crab cakes and I said unequivocally yes. That sounded like a great idea – a fun and delicious night as well as a good chance to spend time together. After soccer was over, we got the ingredients, got home, and got to work.

Unfortunately, however, as my daughter was dicing a jalapeno, the thing squirted right into her eye. Then she reflexively grabbed her eye with the same hand she had previously been using to handle jalapenos. If you’ve ever had jalapeno in the eye before (she hadn’t!), you know what happened next.

A lot of pain and suffering.

But we flushed and flushed and finally I finished the prep work while she sat there holding a cold compress.

Next, though, I had to cook the crab cakes. This involved searing them in a pan and then putting that pan into a very hot oven to bake. I took that pan out of the oven – wearing an oven mitt, of course – and put it on the stove top while I made the salad.

It was in the course of making the salad that my brain forgot that that pan had ever been in the oven. Instead, it went back to being just another pan on the stove. So after the salad was done, I went to put the pan on the island so my daughter and I could serve ourselves and if you’ve ever grabbed something incredibly hot with full conviction because you didn’t think it was hot, you know what happened next.

A lot of pain and suffering.

So it was a pretty sad sack dinner, despite the crab cakes being delicious. Her with her cold compress. Me with my hand in a bucket of water.

Then we cleaned up and went downstairs to play Uno (which was the slowest game of Uno ever because we could each only use one hand). My wife called to check in while this was going on and when she asked how things were going, I had to tell her “Not well.”

It’s incredible how fast and far even great ideas can get off the rails.

Have a great weekend.
